What Is Mental Health?

Discover the Impact of Mental Health First Aid

Mental health is all about how we think, feel, and act.

Everyone has mental health - just like we all have physical health. Sometimes it’s in a good place, sometimes it’s not, and sometimes we may experience a mental health condition. It’s no different from how our physical health can change over time.

What Is Good Mental Health?

Good mental health is when the way you think, feel, and behave helps you navigate daily life in a steady, healthy, and productive way. It doesn’t mean you’re happy all the time or never stressed - just that you’re generally able to cope with challenges, manage your emotions, and maintain relationships.

When your mental health is in a good place, you might feel more balanced, connected to others, and able to enjoy or engage in the things that matter to you.

Just like with physical health, good mental health can look different for everyone, and it can change depending on what’s happening in your life.

Poor mental health means you’re feeling or thinking in ways that make day-to-day life harder.

It might affect your mood, your relationships, your work, or how you cope with everyday tasks.

Just like you might strain your back from heavy lifting, you can also go through a tough patch mentally - like feeling low or stressed for a while.

The intensity and length of these experiences can vary a lot from person to person.

What Is Mental Ill Health?

Mental ill health is when mental health struggles last longer or impact your life more seriously - sometimes enough to be considered a diagnosable mental health condition.

You don’t always need or seek a diagnosis, but the effects are usually more significant than short-term periods of feeling unwell mentally.

And, just like long-term physical conditions such as diabetes, there are treatments and support options available to help manage mental ill health.

I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.
