Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid.
Just as physical first aid teaches you how to offer initial help to someone who is injured or unwell, MHFA teaches you how to support someone who may be experiencing poor mental health.
Mental Health First Aid is the support given to a person if professional help is not immediately required, or while they are waiting to access professional support.
This might involve checking in with someone who doesn’t seem themselves, listening without judgement, encouraging them to seek further help, or recognising when urgent professional support is needed. These skills can also be used to support your own mental wellbeing.
MHFA is not about diagnosing mental health conditions or replacing the role of professionals such as therapists, counsellors, or doctors. Instead, it takes a holistic, person-centred approach, focusing on understanding, early intervention, and appropriate signposting.
A trained Mental Health First Aider is someone who can recognise when a colleague, friend, or acquaintance may be struggling with their mental health and offer first-level support.
This includes listening with empathy, having informed and stigma-free conversations about mental health, and encouraging people to access appropriate professional help and other sources of support.
MHFAiders understand the importance of boundaries and confidentiality, practise self-care, and are equipped with the knowledge and tools provided by MHFA England®, including ongoing learning opportunities and access to resources such as the MHFAider Support App®.

Poor mental health is common, yet stigma and lack of understanding can prevent people from seeking help. Professional support is not always immediately available, and many people are unsure how to respond when someone is struggling.
Mental Health First Aid helps bridge this gap by building confidence, improving mental health literacy, and empowering individuals and organisations to respond compassionately and effectively. By training Mental Health First Aiders, workplaces and communities can create more supportive environments where people feel able to talk openly about mental health and access the help they need.
